I have been approached by some students to discuss the level of support I can offer. They seem very disturbed by the type of contact and quality of content their course offers. I have to admit that I am not surprised by the comprehensive lack of practical experience they have. Basic issues such as lighting, design {visual language}, development of a clear personal identity within the work, are not covered with the right levels of rigour expected in the professional context.
In a recent discussion with a professional body representative he expressed concerns over this area .He felt their barrier to genuine engagement with courses was the use of impenetrable language which effectively obscured any understanding. This seems to be the classic defence mechanism when organisations do not to want to engage with the debates, never mind seek the solutions.
So back to the students, one of them questioned if he was indeed on a photographic course or just a degree related to the subject in a non practical way! I am happy in a way because I enjoy the chance to be of support but would like it not to be needed.
